Vaccination Basics for New Dog Owners

If you’re new to dog ownership, canine vaccination may be something you’re not entirely familiar with. Here, your Wake Forest, NC veterinary professional goes over the basics.

How Do Vaccines Work, Exactly?

Vaccines work by introducing what’s called an antigen to your pet’s immune system. Your dog’s system recognizes the antigen as a disease, and develops natural antibodies as a result. This way, should the real disease ever come along, your dog’s body is prepared to recognize, fight off, or at least lessen the severity of the illness.

What Vaccines Does My Dog Need?

All dogs should receive the core vaccinations early on in life. They’re considered necessary for every dog because of the dangerous and/or contagious nature of the diseases they protect against. The core vaccines usually include those for parvovirus, distemper, calicivirus, and rabies.

Non-core vaccines are given to some dogs based on exposure risk, location and environment, and other circumstances. Examples of non-core vaccines include the Bordetella and hepatitis vaccines.
