Sphynx Cats 101

Sphynx cats are some of the most unique felines to be found anywhere. With their hairless bodies, wide-set eyes, and huge ears, they’re quite the sight! Below, your Rochester, NY veterinarian tells you more about these fascinating pets.

Breed History

Records of hairless cats date back to the early 1900s, but the Sphynx cat as we know it today originated in 1966 in Toronto, Canada. There, a random genetic mutation produced a hairless litter from a pair of domestic shorthair cats—the Sphynx has been around ever since, growing steadily to now enjoy a stable and large gene pool.

Sphynxes are intelligent, inquisitive, and friendly animals. They have a high metabolic rate, and therefore are very high-energy pets; they’ll love jumping, running, and climbing around your home.

Care Needs

In general, the Sphynx’s care needs aren’t drastically different than those of other cats. The hairless body does call for some extra attention, though—you’ll need to bathe a Sphynx frequently to get rid of excess body oil. It’s also very important that you limit a Sphynx’s sun exposure, as their hairless skin can be burned quite easily!
