Everything You Need to Know About the Sphynx

Have you ever seen a sphynx cat? With their hairless body, wide eyes, and large ears, they’re hard to miss! Learn more about these fascinating cats below from your Crown Point, IN vet.

The Sphynx’s History

There are records of hairless cats that date back to the early 1900s, but the Sphynx cat that we know of today originates in 1966. It was that year that a pair of domestic shorthair cats in Toronto, Canada produced a hairless litter thanks to a random genetic mutation. The Sphynx was born! They’ve been around ever since and now enjoy a large, stable gene pool.

Temperament and Personality

Sphynx cats are typically high-energy animals and will probably love jumping, running, and climbing. They’re inquisitive, intelligent, and friendly, and will make a great pet for just about any family.

Care Needs

Most of the Sphynx’s care needs are similar to those of other cats. Their hairless bodies do require some extra care, though, because excess body oil that isn’t removed by fur can cause skin problems. A Sphynx will need regular bathing, and limited sun exposure is also very important.
