Oahu has
about three-fourths of the State's population. It is the center
of business and government for the State of Hawaii and home
to Waikiki, the world famous tourist destination. Because of
the high density of people and development, the threat of a
natural hazard is even more serious here than on other islands.
Oahu is
home to many hazards including floods,
landslides, and coastal
erosion. Wildfires
burned Central Oahu in July 2000, forcing many to evacuate and
closing the H-2 freeway in both directions. On March 6, 2000,
a landslide
at Waimea Bay closed Kamehameha Highway.
