Multi-Hazard Mitigation Planning for Kauai County

The County of Kauai has been engaged in a number of efforts to mitigate the impacts of natural hazards. The types of mitigation actions range from enforcement and improvement of building codes and regulations, land use regulations and zoning, and the development of incentive programs for sheltering to increasing public awareness about the impacts of natural hazards and actions that can be taken locally. For mitigation planning two documents have been developed to meet different needs and requirements.

  1)   County of Kauai Multi-Hazard Mitigation Strategy - The first document that you will find below, downloadable in Adobe pdf format, is the County of Kauai Multi-Hazard Mitigation Strategy, which meets the federal requirements from the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 for local mitigation plans to be developed. This plan ensures that Kauai County will be eligible for funding to mitigate natural hazards and to apply for various assistance programs in the event of a disaster.

  2)   County of Kauai Natural Hazard Risk & Vulnerability Assessment and Mitigation Workbook – The second document was developed during the planning process to educate communities about the process to develop a risk and vulnerability assessment and a hazard mitigation plan. The workbook explains the methods that were used and provides references to documents developed by NOAA Coastal Services Center and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist communities. Although the community meetings and activities were an essential part of the Kauai County plan, it is important for communities to have access to resources and information locally to mitigate the impacts of hazards in their communities. The workbook provides a tool to help communities in this planning process.
