of Maui includes four major islands, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and
Kahoolawe. To learn how to reduce

The island
of Maui evolved from two separate volcanoes that formed the
island. The older West Maui Mountains is 1.3 million years old,
while the larger, East Maui, also known as Haleakala, is relatively
young; last erupting 800 to 1,500 years ago. Although Maui is
not likely threatened by lava flows, it is susceptible to vog;
a problem that affects people with respiratory problems. Major
disasters in Maui County that have been declared by the Governor
since 1980 include: heavy rains and flooding
on March 30 to April 2, 1981; Hurricane
Iniki in September 1992; wildfire
on Molokai in 1994 and 1998; and drought
on Maui from 1997-1998 and again in July 1999.
